Post

Hello again…

I’m still here. Well, “here” as in Germany, actually. And quite possibly having too much fun hiking in the Black Forest to sit down and post things on Tumblr…

Which will change when I get back to Uni and have plenty of time/ fun archaeological/Classical facts to share with yous guys. But just sayin’.

But if you want to follow my hiking adventures, you can do so here: http://astudyofdeadthings.blogspot.com/.

View of the Forum Romanum from the Capitoline Museum; that’s the Arch of Septimus Severus in the front and the Arch of Titus in the back. The column bases to the left belong to the Basilica Iulia.
Sorry I haven’t been updating as much, but I’ve been in summer mode and now Roma mode and come Saturday…Poggio Colla/field school mode.  But! since both Roma and Poggio Colla are super relevant to this blog…I’ll be trying to keep ya’ll posted on my adventures!

I wish I was on a field school in Rome now…

Random Facts #1

Unfortunately, the majority of the good quotes I collected this semester just got recycled away in my Medical Anthropology pile. But as I head off from Zed Afrika, I will leave you with one I particularly enjoyed:

Actors who win an Acadamy Award (Oscar) live on average 4 years longer than their costars who were nominated but did not win.

Izzit?

To make this super brief: I’m in South Africa now. I just got back from vacation in Namibia. It was superfreakingawesome.

Here’s the part where you come in: I need to come up with an idea for an Honours Thesis for next year. And since I study archaeology/anthropology/Classics, and it seems quite a few of you share in at least one of those interests, I thought I’d ask for some opinions/ideas.

As an example of how flexible I am on this, some possible themes/ideas I’ve been turning over are:

  • Piracy in the ancient world (aka the ancient Mediterranean)
  • Ancient warfare
  • Depictions of Africa in the ancient world
  • Pastoral metaphors in the ancient world (esp regarding government)
  • Issues of epigraphy and text preservation
  • Issues of preservation at Pompeii
  • Effects of the current conflicts in N. Africa on archaeological/anthropological heritage and research in the area

Do you have anything you think might make an interesting research project? Or have anything to say on one of my ideas? Keep in mind that my Tumblr next semester will be full of whatever I’m studying, so whatever you want to see more of…

Back to the land of my ancestors

As in, everyone’s ancestors. As in:

Okay, so it’s not a Homo. But I only found a Paranthropus last summer, so that’s all I have a picture of.*

Leaving tomorror morning for Cape Town. So might be AWOL from Tumblr for the next 6 months or so. And I wanted an excuse to post that tooth since I don’t appear to have done so yet.

* If you don’t include all the ones we took in the Broom Room of the Transvaal of, you know, the Taung Child and Mrs. Ples, etc.
